  • Why I Created The Measured Melody: Making Music Assessment Meaningful and Fun

After more than two decades in music education, I learned that some of the most meaningful learning happens when students don’t even realize they’re being assessed.

They’re clapping rhythms, singing melodies, moving to music, creating compositions, and having fun. But as teachers, we know there’s something much more important happening beneath the surface: they’re learning, growing, and developing musical skills that we need to understand and measure.

Why the Name The Measured Melody?

    • Melody: Represents creativity, musical expression, imagination, and the joy of music.
    • Measured: Represents student progress, meaningful assessment, and measurable learning.

Together, they reflect my belief that music learning should be creative, purposeful, and measurable—without losing the fun!

The Missing Piece in Music Education Resources

One of my favorite parts of teaching was creating lessons and activities for my students. I loved finding creative ways to introduce musical concepts, encourage participation, and make learning exciting.

But there was something I consistently struggled to find when searching for music teaching resources: meaningful, practical assessment tools.

There were plenty of adorable worksheets, engaging games, and creative activities. What was often missing was a clear way to determine whether students had actually mastered the musical concepts being taught.

As a music educator, I wanted more than activities that simply kept students busy. I wanted resources that helped me understand what my students knew, what they were still learning, and where instruction needed to go next.

Fun and Assessment Should Go Hand in Hand

I believe music education should be joyful, creative, and engaging. Students should sing, play, move, explore, and discover.

But I also believe that every lesson should have a purpose.

That’s why every lesson or resource I create for The Measured Melody will include some form of assessment.

Sometimes that will be a quick formative assessment, allowing teachers to check understanding during a lesson.

Other times, it will be a summative assessment that demonstrates mastery of a musical skill.

And sometimes, students will assess themselves, reflecting on their performances, identifying areas for improvement, and celebrating their progress.

Assessment doesn’t have to mean another test

It can be a performance, a musical challenge, a partner activity, a creative project, or a simple moment of reflection.

The goal is to make assessment feel like a natural part of music-making rather than something separate from it.

    Why I’m Creating Resources Now

When I was teaching full-time, I rarely had enough time to create all the materials I envisioned.

Between lesson planning, performances, classroom responsibilities, and everything else that comes with being an educator, creativity often had to compete with an overwhelming to-do list.

Now that I’ve stepped away from the classroom and built a career in a different industry, I’ve discovered something unexpected.

    I miss creating.

I miss dreaming up activities that make students excited to learn. I miss the challenge of turning musical concepts into engaging lessons. And I miss the satisfaction of watching students discover that they’re capable of something new.

Now, I finally have the time to create the resources I always wished I’d had.

    Introducing The Measured Melody

The Measured Melody is my way of staying connected to music education while supporting the teachers who are still doing this important work every day.

Through my Teachers Pay Teachers store, I’m developing standards-based music resources that combine creativity, classroom fun, and meaningful assessment.

My growing collection focuses on essential musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, and music literacy. Each resource is designed to help students develop musical skills through engaging activities while giving teachers opportunities to assess and celebrate their progress.

My hope is that these resources will save teachers time, inspire creative instruction, and make assessing musical growth easier and more enjoyable.

Because music education should be both meaningful and fun.

And that’s exactly what The Measured Melody is all about.
